Windermere Holiday Cottages
Windermere is one of the best-known villages in the Lake District National Park, largely due to its close proximity to Lake Windermere and the resort of Bowness-on-Windermere.
The popular “Guide to the Lakes” written by Wordsworth and published in 1810, further promoted the Lake District as a tourist destination.
In 1847, the Windermere Railway station was complete, further increasing the popularity of the already-popular holiday resort. Windermere (the village) was originally called Birthwaite – not many people know that. The railway company decided to name the railway station after the lake, so the town changed its name too.
Now, the village is well-equipped to handle the large influx of visitors, looking to explore the area, travel on one of the Windermere Lake Cruise to Ambleside, Lakeside or Brockhole. Alternatively, jump on the 555 Lakes Explorer Bus up to Keswick.
