Quince Cottage is a lovely 18th century red sandstone two bedroom, dog-friendly property, set in a blissfully peaceful location in the sleepy village of Melkinthorpe. The village is nestled in the lush Eden Valley, just a hop skip and a jump from the Lake District. If you're looking for a comfortable and homely feeling character cottage, with easy access to fantastic scenery, quaint villages, the bustling market town of Penrith, and all the outdoor thrills of the Lake District, Quince Cottage is a great find. Once you discover this area, you will appreciate that you have the best of both worlds; quickly reached from the M6 (15 minutes) and roughly 20 minutes to Penrith or Pooley Bridge. Here you can avoid the crowds and enjoy the rural charm of village life. The Eden Valley is a relatively undiscovered gem with great, easy walks to include riverside rambles through beautiful areas and some really excellent village pubs, or perhaps venture to the higher fells of the North Pennines, which are easy to reach.

The 18th century character of the cottage has been retained with beautiful original beams throughout. Relax in the lounge/ dining area with its feature original stone fireplace and choice of two comfy sofas. The kitchen is nicely fitted with country-style oak cupboards, modern appliances, and all you might need to cook a meal for the family. Upstairs to the two peaceful bedrooms which are again adorned with those lovely beams. There is also a spare room for storage or as a holiday office space (desk and chair provided). One bedroom has a double divan bed and the second bedroom has twin beds, making this a versatile property for couples and families alike. Please note the twin beds will be made up with full bed linens to include standard duvets (updated photograph awaited).

Step outside into the front garden and take a seat at the bistro set for a drink while you plan your next day. Parking is at the rear of the property and two cars can be parked (with care). Just 100 metres up the lane is the wonderful Larch Cottage Nurseries, which not only is a rather swish garden centre, but also has a cafe/ restaurant of some repute, and gallery spaces with changing exhibitions. Treat yourself to a posh breakfast, lunch, or evening meal, just 1 minute from Quince Cottage.

About the location

The lush Eden Valley is aptly named as it is a sparsely populated river valley with small farming community villages with many a great pub and a network of quiet lanes, beloved of cyclists heading to one of the many wonderful traditional country pubs. There's lots of history in this area, ranging from the mysterious stone circle of Long Meg and her Daughters (featured in a poem by Wordsworth) and Lacy's Caves, to the ancient market towns of Penrith and Appleby-in-Westmorland. Walkers will be spoilt for choice with a rich variety of terrains to choose from - within a thirty-minute drive, you could be on the shores of Ullswater, or in the High Pennine fells (try High Cup Nick for a memorable hike). Foodies will be in heaven with treats such as the famous Village Bakery at Melmerby, J&J Graham Deli in Penrith, and no end of great pubs for food in attractive red sandstone villages such as Lazonby, Armathwaite, and Kirkoswald.

Penrith is just 15 minutes away and has independent shops, supermarkets, and great places to eat. The nearby Rheged Visitor Centre is an excellent wet weather place to visit for its exhibitions, artisan shops, and giant cinema screen. The ruins of Lowther Castle are a great day out and kids will love the adventure playground which is one of the best in the region - you can also hire electric bikes and follow routes on the estate. Yet another great place to stop for an ice cream is Abbot Lodge, which sells rather special homemade ice creams and also has children's indoor and outdoor activity areas.

Ullswater is your gateway to all the activities and majestic scenery of the Lake District. Rather than battling the crowds of the central Lakes, why not discover the more tranquil eastern Lakes, to include both Ullswater, and the lesser visited Haweswater.
  • Pub: Lowther Castle Inn 2.5 miles.
  • Cafe / Restaurant - Larch Cottage 100 metres
  • Supermarket: Booths, Morrisons, Sainsbury's & Cranstons Food Hall in Penrith - 5 Miles
  • Lakes: Ullswater 9 Miles / Derwent Water 22 Miles
