Middle Kellet

Silecroft
Sleeps 3
Bedrooms 2

Middle Kellet is set in a courtyard location in the middle of the seaside village of Silecroft. This characterful 18th century property is a lovely quiet retreat with its centuries old beams and exposed stonework emphasising how sturdily they made houses in the past. Great for three people, whether a small family or three adults, Middle Kellet is an excellent base from which to explore the dramatic and quieter south western part of the Lake District. You will have all sorts of things to do - sun and fun on the beach (check out the Silecroft Beach Cafe), climbing Black Combe (great views of the Duddon Estuary) or further up the coast to Ravenglass, Muncaster Castle, Scafell Pike, and Britain's best view at Wasdale. Those who stay in the middle of the Lakes are missing a brilliant place for a holiday with the bonus of no crowds! If you don't drive, you can reach Silecroft by train on the scenic coastal railway - the local station is a 3-minute walk away.

Inside Middle Kellet, there is a good kitchen/dining area set up with all you need to make meals and snacks. On this ground floor level is a shower room, which is in addition to the second bathroom upstairs. Step into the ultra cosy lounge with beams and exposed stonework. An excellent sofa and easy chair await as you relax in front of the telly with something refreshing...Upstairs to the two bedrooms - one of which has a double brass bedstead whilst the second bedroom contains a full-size (3ft) single bed in what is quite a good-sized room. If your exertions mean a bath would be welcome, there is a bathtub in the upstairs bathroom. Oil-fired central heating ensures year-round comfort.

To the rear, there is a lawned and fully enclosed garden with high pebble walls. In the garden, there is also a picnic table for you to enjoy some more fresh air in this very sheltered garden. Parking is no problem with a dedicated space just opposite the cottage in the courtyard.

If you have a larger party, we also have West Kellet (sleeps 5) on the same site, just across the courtyard.

Silecroft is a traditional, untouristy seaside village with a local pub just a few minutes walk away and, best of all, you can be walking on the sandy beach in 15 minutes, or starting your ascent of Black Combe, straight from the door.

Silecroft

About the location

The south western corner of Cumbria is a quiet area fringing the Irish Sea and here the fells reach almost to the sea. In this area, you notice the light has a special seaside quality, and the air is always fresh. Although it takes a little longer to reach than the central Lakes, here you have a lot of excellent reasons to consider a holiday in this area. There are so many outdoor activities and attractions within a short distance:

Beaches,beaches, beaches!
Silecroft Beach, with its new beach cafe, is a great place for endless strolls and beach fun. A bit further down the coast is a Blue Flag beach at Haverigg (12 minute drive) where there are also extensive sand dunes.
Watersports - Port Haverigg (12 minute drive) has a brilliant Aqua Park where kids can enjoy the inflatable assault course and slides, and adults can try out wake surfing and stand-up paddle boarding. Port Haverigg Aqua Park
Golf nearby at Silecroft Golf Club

The Fells:
Black Combe is your local fell, and the views from the top have unrivalled views over the Duddon Estuary and, if clear, you can see as far as the Isle of Man. Slightly further away are the rarely visited Corney Fells, and just beyond them, you have the superb scenery of Eskdale and the Duddon Valley - Wordsworth rated the Duddon Valley as one of his favourite areas of the Lakes. For the ultimate challenge, Scafell Pike, England's highest mountain, can be ascended from Eskdale or Wasdale - it's about a 45 minute drive to the easiest Scafell Pike ascent start point at Wasdale Head. Also easily reached, are the Coniston Fells - the village of Coniston can be reached in 35 minutes.

Attractions:
The Ravenglass and Eskdale narrow gauge railway runs through most of the year and you can reach the Ravenglass terminus by catching a train from Silecroft to Ravenglass. Muncaster Castle is just up the coast near Ravenglass and is an excellent place to visit for all the family. As well as the ancient house and gardens (especially spectacular in the spring), there is the Hawk and Owl Centre with live displays of the flying skills of the hawks. The nearby Swinside Stone Circle is a late Neolithic/ Bronze Age as good as any in the north of England. Fancy a ride on a magnificent Heavy Horse? Just a few miles from Silecroft is the Cumbria Heavy Horses centre (find them on Facebook). Fancy some real adventure? In Eskdale you can try gorge scrambling and pool jumping - see what's on offer here and the RPSB reserve at Hodbarrow. Excellent fish and chips can be had at the chippy in the seaside village of Haverigg (10 minute drive).

Great Towns and Villages:
Millom (10 minutes) has shops and services to include supermarket, butchers, bakers, and petrol station. Broughton in Furness is a large village with a very well-regarded bakers/cafe and real ale pub, the Manor Arms . Believe it or not, Broughton can claim to having a butchers, a baker and a candlestick maker (you can also try your hand at making candles here). Ravenglass is a special seaside village set on the edge of the River Esk estuary. The famous narrow gauge railway starts here on its magical journey up the Esk Valley.

Supplies:
On the Silecroft Holiday Park (15 minute walk), there is a convenience store.
Broughton in Furness (8 miles) has a traditional butchers, a greengrocers, and a bakery/cafe.
Millom (4 miles) has a Tesco Supermarket and a Shell petrol station.
Haverigg (4 miles) has a convenience store and a good fish and chip shop.

Trains:
Silecroft Railway Station is a three-minute walk away and services go north up the coast to Ravenglass, Whitehaven and eventually all the way to Carlisle. In the other direction, services go to Millom, Barrow and on the scenic coastal route over towards Lancaster, and the West Coast main line. Ulverston is traditional Cumbrian market town with independent shops, good pubs and other attractions. Ulverston can be reached directly by train from Silecroft. If you want to make a day of it by train, you can travel further on the coastal railway line to the genteel Edwardian seaside town of Grange-over-Sands.
