Fellgarth

Patterdale
Sleeps 9
Bedrooms 4
Dog Friendly

If a property has been a much-loved and successful holiday home for 60 years, you know you are in for a treat. Fellgarth has been designed to enjoy the most stunning of Lakeland mountain scenery and can boast that it is the only house to have a view of the summit of Helvellyn. Up to 9 guests can enjoy a peaceful retreat that is just a hop, skip and a jump from Ullswater lake. You will be pleased to know that the village pubs in Patterdale can be reached in a 10-minute walk (maybe slightly longer on the way back...). Walkers are totally spoilt for choice here with walks directly from the door, including Place Fell, the lake shore path along Ullswater, a section of the Coast to Coast path, Helvellyn, St Sunday Crag, and many more. Don't forget that up to two dogs (£20 per dog) are welcome to stay.

The house is accessed by 37 steps from the parking area. Once you reach the house, you will get your first look at those incredible views. Enter via the kitchen and enjoy a cuppa and some treats from the welcome pack. The kitchen is open plan to the dining room and has a modern wood-burning stove to warm you as you dine. Kitchen facilities are really good, with a double oven, good worktop and storage space, dishwasher, and fridge/ freezer. There's also a handy washing machine and a separate dryer (utility cupboard). The dining table set-up is flexible depending on your party size and strategically positioned by the window and woodburner. Step through to the sitting room with its dual aspect windows looking south to the Kirkstone Pass and west towards the Helvellyn range. Here you'll find another woodburner and plenty of comfy seating, as well as a Smart TV and a great selection of books and maps.

There is a ground-floor double bedroom with a house bathroom (bath with shower over). There's also a separate WC on this level. You will find the other three bedrooms all on the first floor - The superking bedroom has an en-suite with a bath and shower over. There is a twin bedroom (yet more amazing views!), a bunk room with an additional single bed (to make the occupancy up to 9 guests). Also on the first floor is another house bathroom with a shower over the bath.

Outside is wonderful - with a partly sloping lawned area, trees, bushes and springtime daffodils. A level lawned area has a picnic table and another bench on the verandah, all placed to take advantage of this elevated location above the Patterdale Valley. The bird and red squirrel feeders are very popular with the local wildlife and, if you're lucky, you may spot other wildlife, including deer and badgers. We do go on about the location of Fellgarth, but with very good reason. You won't find many holiday properties with such a great combination of peaceful location, an easy walk to a village and lakeshore, and what can only be described as some of the very best fell walks in all of the UK.

Stay here once and we bet you will be back for more, whatever the time of year - bright spring days with the daffodils dancing, long summer days, crisp autumn with its mellow colours and snow-capped winter days.

Fellgarth is now accepting bookings for arrivals starting late November 2025. Reserve Fellgarth before someone else does!

Patterdale

About the location

Patterdale is a picturesque village situated southern end of Ullswater Lake. This Lakeland village benefits from two pubs, The White Lion, and Patterdale Hotel, and a pretty church, which is a favourite starting point for walks. The 508 bus route operates between Penrith and Windermere, passing the end of the lane. There is a village shop and mini-market in Glenridding (1 mile away) for grocery essentials, an outdoor gear shop, cafe, and a National Park information centre.

Adjacent to Patterdale, within walking distance, is Glenridding village and the Glenridding Ullswater Steamer pier. You can hop on board one of the steamers to Howtown, Aira Force (seasonally) or further to the northern shores of Ullswater Lake at Pooley Bridge.

The fabulous Ullswater Way footpath can be joined directly from the cottage, and hugs the eastern shore to Pooley Bridge via Howtown. Without needing to use your car, there are several popular fell walks you can start from the cottage, including the Striding Edge path up to Helvellyn, Place Fell, High Street, Glenridding Dodd, the Helvellyn range, Fairfield and St Sunday Crag, so you'll be spoilt for choice! The Ullswater Steamers ply the entire length of Ullswater, with the main departure points being at Glenridding and Pooley Bridge. The steamers also stop at Howtown to allow for a lakeshore walk back to Glenridding, or vice versa. There is also a seasonal service stopping at Aira Force, one of the Lake District's most impressive waterfalls, with lovely woodland walks through the National Trust land between the lake and the waterfall.

The famous village of Ambleside is a 30-minute drive away, over the dramatic Kirkstone Pass, where you have a variety of pubs, restaurants and cafes. At the northern tip of Windermere Lake, you can again hop on board one of the Windermere Lake Cruises to Bowness Pier, or further to Lakeside at the southern tip, where you'll find the Lakeside Aquarium and Haverthwaite Steam Railway.

This is truly a special place for a holiday in the Lake District; whether it's relaxation, walking or adventure, you're sure to find it all nearby!
