About the location

High Borrans Farm is ideally situated just a 10-minute drive from Windermere in the picturesque Lake District. The farm is located approximately two and a half miles from Windermere and less than 20 minutes by car from Ambleside. Its convenient position, just a mile off the A591, provides excellent access to the entire national park, including popular destinations such as Keswick, Grasmere, and Ullswater.

The farm is a sprawling 1000-acre working hill farm. It supports a substantial flock of over 1200 Swaledale ewes and approximately 25 beef suckler cows. The farm is situated at an elevation of around 1,300 feet on heather-clad fell tops, an area historically used for grouse shooting. Today, it is recognised as a magnificent setting for nature enthusiasts.

  • Notable Routes and Areas:

    • Garburn Pass: A well-known track accessible from the farm, with footpaths leading to high fells like Ill Bell and Froswick, and connecting to High Street, a famous Roman Road running along the fell tops from Windermere to Penrith.

    • Staveley Mill Yard: Described as a "centre of the mountain bikers' universe in the Lake District," it's home to Wilf's Café and Wheelbase, the UK's largest specialist mountain bike store, and is a very short ride from High Borrans Lodges.

    • Lake District National Park: The wider area offers a multitude of walking routes, including the accessible "Miles Without Stiles" series, the West Windermere Way, and the Ullswater Way. The park is also renowned for biking, providing both challenging climbs and flatter routes suitable for families.
