Hillside

Silecroft
Sleeps 4
Bedrooms 2
Dog Friendly

Hillside is a recently transformed period cottage situated on a quiet lane in the peaceful coastal village of Silecroft. Following a comprehensive high-standard refurbishment in 2025, the property combines its original architectural character with modern, high-end finishes. Located on the quieter western edge of the Lake District National Park, it serves as a sophisticated and functional base for couples or small families looking to explore both the Cumbrian fells and the Irish Sea coastline.

The ground floor features a thoughtfully designed lounge, where traditional wood panelling and a classic open fire create a grounded and inviting atmosphere. This space is well-suited for relaxing after a day of hiking, equipped with a wall-mounted Smart TV and a selection of board games. A discrete circular dining table provides a dedicated space for morning coffee or evening meals, making the most of the cottage's period proportions.

The sleek galley kitchen has been efficiently planned to maximise both space and utility. It features an electric induction hob, modern cabinetry, and a full suite of appliances, including a Nescafé Dolce Gusto machine and a washer-dryer combo. Whether you are preparing a quick picnic for the beach or a full dinner, the kitchen is well-stocked with high-quality cookware, crockery, and glassware.

Sleeping arrangements are split across the upper levels to provide privacy and flexibility. On the first floor, you will find an airy bedroom featuring a king-size zip-and-link bed that can be configured as two singles upon request. This floor also benefits from a convenient separate WC. The 2025 update is evident throughout in the neutral decor and crisp, contemporary styling.

The second floor is home to a versatile twin bedroom tucked quietly under the eaves, which can also be converted into a king-size double. This level also houses the main contemporary shower room, which features a walk-in electric shower and the added comfort of underfloor heating. A second separate WC on this floor ensures the layout is practical for groups of up to four guests.

While the property retains its original period footprint, lacking a private garden, a traditional bench at the front door provides a pleasant vantage point to enjoy the village atmosphere. The expansive sands of Silecroft Beach are less than a mile away, while the trail for Black Combe Fell begins just three miles from the front door. Hillside offers a high-standard, comfortable retreat for those who value quality interiors and direct access to the outdoors.

Silecroft

About the location

The south western corner of Cumbria is a quiet area fringing the Irish Sea, and here the fells reach almost to the sea. In this area, you notice the light has an exceptional seaside quality, and the air is always fresh. Although it takes a little longer to reach than the central Lakes, there are many excellent reasons to consider a holiday in this area. There are so many outdoor activities and attractions within a short distance:

Beaches, beaches, beaches!
Silecroft Beach, with its new beach cafe, is an excellent place for endless strolls and beach fun. A bit further down the coast is a Blue Flag beach at Haverigg (12-minute drive), where there are also extensive sand dunes.
Watersports - Port Haverigg (a 12-minute drive) features a brilliant Aqua Park where kids can enjoy the inflatable assault course and slides, while adults can try out wake surfing and stand-up paddleboarding.
Golf nearby at Silecroft Golf Club offers day passes.

The Fells:
Black Combe is your local fell, and the views from the top have unrivalled views over the Duddon Estuary and, if clear, you can see as far as the Isle of Man. Slightly further away are the rarely visited Corney Fells, and just beyond them, you have the superb scenery of Eskdale and the Duddon Valley - Wordsworth rated the Duddon Valley as one of his favourite areas of the Lakes. For the ultimate challenge, Scafell Pike, England's highest mountain, can be ascended from Eskdale or Wasdale - it's about a 45-minute drive to the easiest Scafell Pike ascent start point at Wasdale Head. Also easily reached are the Coniston Fells - the village of Coniston can be reached in 35 minutes.

Attractions:
The Ravenglass and Eskdale narrow gauge railway runs through most of the year, and you can reach the Ravenglass terminus by catching a train from Silecroft to Ravenglass. Muncaster Castle is just up the coast near Ravenglass and is an excellent place to visit for all the family. In addition to the ancient house and gardens (especially spectacular in the spring), there is the Hawk and Owl Centre, featuring live displays of the hawks' flying skills. The nearby Swinside Stone Circle is a late Neolithic/ Bronze Age site as good as any in the north of England. Fancy a ride on a magnificent Heavy Horse? Just a few miles from Silecroft is the Cumbria Heavy Horses centre (find them on Facebook). Fancy some real adventure? In Eskdale you can try gorge scrambling and pool jumping - see what's on offer here and the RPSB reserve at Hodbarrow. Excellent fish and chips can be had at the chippy in the seaside village of Haverigg (10-minute drive).

Great Towns and Villages:
Millom (10 minutes) offers a range of shops and services, including a supermarket, butchers, bakers, and a petrol station. Broughton in Furness is a large village with a very well-regarded baker's/cafe and real ale pub, the Manor Arms. Believe it or not, Broughton can claim to having a butchers, a baker and a candlestick maker (you can also try your hand at making candles here). Ravenglass is a special seaside village set on the edge of the River Esk estuary. The famous narrow gauge railway starts here on its magical journey up the Esk Valley.

Supplies:
At Silecroft Holiday Park (a 15-minute walk away), a convenience store is open during the summer season.
Broughton in Furness (8 miles) has a traditional butchers, a greengrocer's, and a bakery/cafe.
Millom (4 miles) has a Tesco Supermarket and a Shell petrol station.
Haverigg (4 miles) has a convenience store and a good fish and chip shop.

Trains:
Silecroft Railway Station is a three-minute walk away, and services go north up the coast to Ravenglass, Whitehaven and eventually all the way to Carlisle. In the other direction, services go to Millom, Barrow, and on the scenic coastal route over towards Lancaster, and the West Coast Main Line. Ulverston is a traditional Cumbrian market town with independent shops, good pubs and other attractions. Ulverston can be reached directly by train from Silecroft. If you want to make a day of it by train, you can travel further on the coastal railway line to the genteel Edwardian seaside town of Grange-over-Sands.
