Valentines in the Lake District 2026

As you may be aware, this Valentine’s Day falls on a Saturday, meaning you have a perfect excuse for a weekend away!

If you are looking for ideas on where to visit with your loved one, or maybe you are looking to plan a surprise? The Lake District is a perfect place to spend a romantic weekend together. Below, we have rounded up a few ideas to make planning a little bit easier. From scenic walks to places to stay, we have you covered!

Scenic Walks

Buttermere Lake Circular

Arguably one of the most scenic lakes in the Lake District, Buttermere offers a generally stable 7 km path, making it a perfect walk with stunning views along the way. The trail is suitable for most walkers and takes you past open meadows and woodland.

For those wanting more of a challenge, you can continue up the path to Haystacks, one of Alfred Wainwright’s favourite hikes, where rocky ridges and amazing views await.

Rydal caves

Rydal Caves is a popular choice this time of year, with the weather being unpredictable, it’s a great opportunity to explore something a little different. Park at White Moss car park, from there you follow the path, taking around 30 minutes depending on walking ability.

For a longer route, you can head up to Loughrigg Fell for a higher vantage point of the surrounding area. Or why not continue around Rydal Water, stopping off at the Badger bar for a well-deserved drink!

Tarn Hows

A couple of weeks ago I headed out for a walk around Tarn Hows and honestly can’t believe I’d never been before, what a place!

From the main car park, I followed the path to the left (with a quick stop at the waterfall, obviously). After walking along the edge of the tarn, I picked up the path that goes up to Black Crag Fell, one of the smaller Wainwrights, sitting at 323m and well worth the extra effort for the views.

If you’re after something gentler, the circular path around the tarn is wheelchair-accessible and perfect for a short, easy stroll with some really stunning scenery!

Stop off at Joey’s Café located in the car park afterwards, or maybe take a brew round the walk with you if it’s slightly colder weather.

Visiting the Villages

Grasmere

Just a short drive from Ambleside or Windermere, Grasmere is easy to reach and feels like stepping into a storybook. The village is famous for its gingerbread, so make sure to pop in for a taste. There are a few cosy cafés and independent shops to wander around, and if you fancy a quiet walk, the lake is only a short stroll from the village centre.

Hawkshead

Hawkshead sits in the heart of the Lakes and is best reached by car from Ambleside or Coniston, though there are buses from nearby towns. It’s full of narrow streets, whitewashed cottages, and independent shops that make browsing a pleasure. Stop by the Hawkshead Grammar School museum or just enjoy a coffee in one of the small cafés and watch the world go by, it’s a lovely spot for a relaxed wander.

Cartmel

Cartmel is slightly further out, approximately 35 mins from Windermere, making it an good day trip destination. Known for its priory and famous sticky toffee pudding, it’s a mix of history and food treats.

There are plenty of small shops, a handful of cafés, and the village has a quiet charm. If you are looking for a special restaurant for a romantic meal, the three Michelin-starred L’enclume in Cartmel has been rated the second-best place to eat in the world.

Activities & things to do

Spa days

From Lodore Falls to The Swan at Newby Bridge, the Lake District has several excellent spa destinations for couples. Whether you want a couple of hours of relaxation or a full afternoon of massages, facials, and other treatments, there’s something for every type of break. A spa day is a perfect way to unwind after a morning walk or as a treat for a slower day together.

Museums and History

For a quieter afternoon, the Lake District has a good mix of small museums and historic sites to explore together. Places like Dove Cottage and the Wordsworth Museum in Grasmere, Kendal Museum, and Hawkshead Grammar School Museum are easy to visit and don’t take up a whole day. They’re ideal if you want to slow the pace a little, especially when the weather isn’t great, and most are close to cafés for a coffee stop afterwards.

Boat Trips

Seeing the lakes from the water gives a completely different perspective. From Ullswater’s steamer cruises to smaller boat hire on Windermere, there are plenty of options for couples. A short trip can be a peaceful way to enjoy the scenery!
