Buzzard Lodge

Perched a short distance from the shores of one of England's most breathtaking lakes, Buzzard Lodge is a beautifully designed modern retreat set within the grounds of the historic Patterdale Estate, near Glenridding in the heart of the Lake District National Park. One of just three exclusive lodges on the estate with lake views, Buzzard has been thoughtfully oriented to make the most of its extraordinary surroundings — its generous enclosed decking and floor-to-ceiling windows framing views of the shimmering waters of Ullswater and the dramatic fells that rise beyond. Whether you arrive at dawn to watch the mist lift from the lake or settle in at dusk with a glass of wine on the deck as the mountains glow amber, this is a place that simply takes your breath away.

Inside, the lodge strikes a perfect balance between contemporary comfort and relaxed, unhurried living. The spectacular open-plan kitchen, dining, and living space sits beneath a soaring vaulted ceiling, flooded with natural light through extensive glazing and French patio doors that open directly onto the enclosed decking. The kitchen is a cook's delight — fully equipped and spacious, with everything you could possibly need to prepare a memorable meal after a day in the fells. The living area invites you to sink into soft seating beside the glow of the wood-effect stove and lose yourselves in good conversation, a favourite series, or simply the ever-changing view outside. With two beautifully appointed king-size double bedrooms — each with its own French patio doors and lake views — Buzzard is equally well suited to a family with children or two couples seeking a stylish and sociable escape.

Staying here is not merely a holiday — it is a contribution to something genuinely meaningful. The estate has been welcoming guests since 1950, and every booking directly supports the charitable work of YMCA North Tyneside, helping to transform the lives of vulnerable and disadvantaged young people across the North East. Beyond the lodge itself, guests are invited to make full use of the estate's shared grounds — including picnic areas, a communal fire pit, and lakeside pathways — creating a wonderful sense of community and connection with this special corner of Cumbria. And with the villages of Patterdale and Glenridding just a short stroll away, along with the famous Ullswater Steamers right on your doorstep, the very best of the Lake District is yours to explore.

About the location

Buzzard Lodge sits within the Patterdale Estate on the southern shores of Ullswater — widely regarded as one of the most beautiful lakes in all of England. Cradled by the high fells of the Eastern Lake District, this is a corner of Cumbria that rewards the curious: whether you fancy a leisurely lakeside stroll, a challenging fell walk up Helvellyn or Place Fell, or simply sitting on the decking watching the world drift by on the water below. The villages of Patterdale and Glenridding are both within easy walking distance, offering local pubs, cafés, and independent shops, as well as the famous Ullswater Steamers pier — from which you can sail north along the lake to the spectacular Aira Force waterfall or all the way to the pretty market town of Pooley Bridge at Ullswater's northern tip.

The wider Ullswater Valley is steeped in natural drama and literary heritage — it was on these very shores that William Wordsworth was inspired to write his celebrated poem about a host of golden daffodils. For outdoor enthusiasts, the area offers world-class walking, wild swimming, kayaking, paddleboarding, and cycling, with routes and trails to suit all abilities and appetites. The estate itself borders the lakeshore, providing guests with direct access to peaceful waterside pathways — a rare and wonderful privilege that few holiday properties can offer.

A stay at Buzzard Lodge also carries a genuinely uplifting purpose. The Patterdale Estate was gifted to YMCA North Tyneside in 1950 by the philanthropist Rowland Lishman, who had fallen in love with the valley during family summers spent walking the fells. His vision — to preserve this landscape and share it with as many people as possible — lives on today, with every stay generating a surplus that supports YMCA's vital charitable work with vulnerable young people across the North East. In choosing Buzzard Lodge, you are not simply booking a holiday; you are becoming part of a story that has been enriching lives for over seven decades.
