North Lodge

Longsleddale
Sleeps 4
Bedrooms 2

North Lodge sits on Murthwaite Farm, a working sheep farm in the quiet valley of Longsleddale. It's a single-storey retreat for up to four guests who want peace, space and a view worth waking up to. It is one of only two lodges on the farm, alongside its neighbour South Lodge. Kendal is around five miles away, yet the valley feels a world away from the busier corners of the Lakes.

The view is the star of the show. From the lodge and its patio the outlook runs north along the length of the valley, with the fells rising on either side and the farm's flock grazing in the fields beyond the garden. You might take your morning coffee on the decking, linger over lunch at the patio table, or simply watch the light and weather change the hillsides through the day. It's the kind of place where you happily find yourself doing very little.

Inside, everything is on one level and sensibly laid out. The open-plan living space brings together a well-equipped kitchen, a dining table set by the window to make the most of the view, and a comfortable sitting area around a gas fire, which is just the spot to settle in after a day outdoors. French doors open onto the decking and garden. A central hallway leads to a king-size bedroom with its own walk-in wardrobe, a twin room and a shower room with a rain shower.

Step outside and Longsleddale is yours to explore. There are walks of every level in the valley, from gentle strolls beside the River Sprint to longer climbs towards Sadgill and the old Gatescarth Pass. Afterwards, you can head back to a warm lodge, a home-cooked supper and the deep quiet of a valley evening.

Longsleddale

About the location

Longsleddale is one of the quietest and least-visited valleys on the south-eastern edge of the Lake District. It is reached by a narrow lane that leaves the A6 north of Kendal at the hamlet of Garnett Bridge. The River Sprint runs the length of the dale, and the lane follows it up to the hamlet of Sadgill.

Beyond Sadgill, an old packhorse route climbs over the Gatescarth Pass towards Haweswater. Walkers can enjoy riverside paths, the reed-fringed Skeggles Water and the high ground around Kentmere Pike and Harter Fell. Little St Mary's Church, midway up the valley, has a small car park opposite that makes a handy starting point.

The valley has a long and characterful history. St Mary's was rebuilt in 1863 and still holds a silver chalice dating from 1571. For generations, the River Sprint powered the bobbin and corn mills at Garnett Bridge, and quarries near the head of the valley produced fine blue slate from the late 18th century. Longsleddale has a literary side too. Mrs Humphry Ward used it as "Long Whindale" in her 1888 novel Robert Elsmere, and its hamlets and hills helped inspire John Cunliffe's Greendale, home of Postman Pat.

Kendal, around five miles away, is the nearest town and covers everyday needs, with supermarkets, independent shops, cafés, pubs and restaurants. Known as the "Auld Grey Town" for its limestone buildings and famous as the home of Kendal Mint Cake, the town also has the ruins of Kendal Castle overlooking the town. The Brewery Arts Centre offers cinema, theatre and live music, the Lakeland Climbing Centre is on the edge of town, and the Kendal Mountain Festival takes place every November. Staveley, Windermere and Bowness-on-Windermere are all an easy drive away.
  • Burneside – approx. 4 miles (Via back lanes)
  • Kendal – approx. 5 miles
  • Staveley – approx. 7 miles (Via back lanes)
  • Windermere – approx. 11 miles (Via back lanes)
  • Bowness-on-Windermere – approx. 13 miles (Via back lanes)
