Cherry Holme

Glenridding
Sleeps 14
Bedrooms 6
Dog Friendly

Cherry Holme is a striking family house in the heart of Glenridding, at the southern tip of Ullswater, just a short stroll from the village shops, cafés and the pier for the Ullswater 'Steamers'. Built into the hillside and rising over three floors, it enjoys lake views from most of its windows. With six bedrooms, every one of them en-suite, it sleeps up to 14 guests in real comfort, making it equally suited to a family week of fell walks and lake trips or a gathering to mark a special occasion.

The heart of the house is on the first floor, where a country-cottage kitchen with a central island flows into a relaxed sitting area. French doors open onto a tiled patio and a balcony that wraps around two sides of the house, with the garden and gas barbecue beyond. Next door to the kitchen, the dining room is made for occasions: a table for twelve set before floor-to-ceiling windows looking out to the lake, with a log-burning stove.

When the weather turns, Cherry Holme has entertainment in abundance. Settle into the reclining leather seats of the cinema room, where a 100-inch screen and surround sound bring films to life, or head down to the games room for table tennis, pool and Xbox tournaments. After a day on the fells, the two-tier wood-clad sauna is the perfect place to ease tired legs, and there's a gym with a Peloton bike for those who like to keep up their routine. An office with a view across the lake to the fells means you can check in with work without missing out.

At the top of the house, the principal suite is a peaceful retreat, with a super-king bed beneath a vaulted ceiling and an en-suite bathroom with a freestanding bath and twin basins.

Practical touches make the stay effortless, from a rear porch for muddy boots to off-street parking, an EV charger and full-fibre broadband. One well-behaved dog is welcome to join you.

Glenridding

About the location

Glenridding sits at the southern end of Ullswater, the second-largest lake in the Lake District, beneath the slopes of Helvellyn. The village has a lovely choice of cafés, pubs and places to eat, along with outdoor shops and bike hire, and it's home to the main pier for the Ullswater 'Steamers'. From here you can sail to Aira Force, to Howtown on the quieter eastern shore, or all the way to Pooley Bridge at the northern end. A little way along the shore is Glencoyne Bay, where the Wordsworths saw the wild daffodils that inspired 'I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud'.

Walkers are spoilt for choice right from the doorstep. Helvellyn, England's third-highest mountain, can be climbed from the village via the famous Striding Edge, a thrilling route for experienced walkers. Gentler options include short climbs to Lanty's Tarn or Glenridding Dodd, the track up Glenridding Beck to the old Greenside lead mines, and the lakeshore path from nearby Patterdale to Silver Point.

One of the most popular days out is to take the steamer to Howtown and walk back along the eastern shore on a stretch of the Ullswater Way. The National Trust's Aira Force waterfall, just a few miles up the lake, is another favourite.

On warmer days, hire a canoe or kayak from Glenridding Sailing Centre and see the fells from the water. To explore further afield, leave the car at home and hop aboard the 508 bus, which runs between Windermere and Penrith over the dramatic Kirkstone Pass, stopping at Glenridding and the other Ullswater villages. With capped bus fares, it's an easy way to get around without worrying about traffic or parking. From Penrith, which is on the West Coast Main Line, you can travel on to Keswick and, in season, Buttermere. From Windermere, connections run to Ambleside, Coniston and the Langdales.
  • Patterdale – 1 mile
  • Pooley Bridge – 8 miles
  • Ambleside (via Kirkstone Pass/Troutbeck) – 16 miles
  • Penrith – 14 miles
  • Keswick – 16 miles
