4 Low Rake

Glenridding
Sleeps 4
Bedrooms 2

4 Low Rake is a terraced ex-miners cottage set on the track to the summit of Helvellyn at the edge of the village of Glenridding. Recently refurbished and with a cosy and fresh feel, 4 Low Rake is ideal for couples or a small family looking for a great base to explore the very best of the Lake District scenery and attractions. The location is unbeatable and the elevated position provides panoramic views of the mountains that surround you. Despite the feel that you are 'in the mountains', you can walk down into Glenridding village and the lake in 15 /20 minutes and it's just a 6 minute walk to the Travellers Rest pub.

Downstairs is a semi-open plan layout, with the lounge with logburner leading through to the modern kitchen. Upstairs, there are two decently sized bedrooms and a modern bathroom.
The owners have taken great care with the refurbishment to present the property as a blend of the traditional and the modern. 4 Low Rake has been decorated with excellent use of colour and local artwork, and has been designed for comfort and ease of use. What could be better after a day on the fells, than to sink into the sofa in front of the logburner and still enjoy the views from the lounge window. The lounge has a lovely deep-cushioned sofa and two easy chairs. It's just a few steps to the kitchen, which is well laid out with modern cupboard units, electric oven, induction hob, washer, dryer, microwave, kettle, and toaster (no dishwasher). There is a small dining table (with stools) in the kitchen. Head upstairs from the lounge to the bedrooms and bathroom. The double bedroom at the front of the house has the most fabulous view over the valley to the mountains beyond. The bathroom has a good-size bath with shower over, and a heated towel rail. Please note that WI-FI will be installed in August 2025 (please enquire if we have a confirmed date for installation before booking)

Outside, there is a small space with a bench for you to enjoy a brew and a biscuit as you survey the view towards Birkhouse Moor. Parking for one car is provided in a car park just 20 metres or so away. You may find you don't the need the car so often as you will be spoilt for choice with walks from the door - be that 'the big one' up Helvellyn - the main path runs right in front of the cottage door and gives you a small 'head start' up the route to Helvellyn, or down to Ullswater lake to either do the lakeshore walk, or hop on an Ullswater steamer. The steamer trip on the lake is surely one of the most scenic boat rides in the UK.

Glenridding

About the location

Glenridding is a picturesque village situated at the southern end of Ullswater Lake. This Lakeland village benefits from three pubs, The Travellers Rest, The Ramblers Bar, and The Ullswater Inn. The 508 bus route operates between Penrith and Patterdale and, seasonally, on to Windermere. There is a village shop and mini-market in Glenrididing for grocery essentials, an outdoor gear shop, cafe, and a National Park information centre.

The fabulous fells all around Ullswater are yours to enjoy without needing to use your car. There are several popular fell walks you can start from the cottage, including the Striding Edge path up to Helvellyn, Place Fell, High Street, Glenridding Dodd, the Helvellyn range, Fairfield and St Sunday Crag, so you'll be spoilt for choice! The Ullswater Steamers ply the entire length of Ullswater, with the main departure points being at Glenridding and Pooley Bridge. The steamers also stop at Howtown to allow for a lakeshore walk back to Glenridding, or vice versa. There is also a seasonal service stopping at Aira Force, one of the Lake District's most impressive waterfalls, with lovely woodland walks through the National Trust land between the lake and the waterfall.

The famous village of Ambleside is a 30-minute drive away, over the dramatic Kirkstone Pass, where you have a variety of pubs, restaurants and cafes. At the northern tip of Windermere Lake, you can again hop on board one of the Windermere Lake Cruises to Bowness Pier, or further to Lakeside at the southern tip, where you'll find the Lakeside Aquarium and Haverthwaite Steam Railway.

This is truly a special place for a holiday in the Lake District; whether it's relaxation, walking or adventure, you're sure to find it all nearby!
