40 The Gill

Ulverston
Sleeps 4
Bedrooms 2
Dog Friendly
40 The Gill is a gorgeous two-bedroom holiday home situated on The Gill in the market town of Ulverston, less than a 5-minute walk from the lovely shops, restaurants and pubs.

Ulverston is a popular holiday location primarily due to its proximity to many of the Lake District's most popular attractions, including Lake Windermere, Coniston Water and the West Cumbrian coastline, although locally, you also have plenty to see and do, such as walking up The Hoad to The Sir John Barrow Monument and marvelling at the spectacular views of Morecambe Bay, or perhaps visit the South Lakes Safari Zoo just 4-miles away.

Formally the traditional home to the farmers' hiring fairs, today, The Gill is better known as the start of the Cumbria Way walking trail - a five-day trek from Ulverton to Carlise. Expect to see plenty of walkers, especially in the summer - perhaps give them a cheer as they pass. The Gill still hosts a variety of fairs and events throughout the year.

The house was fully refurbished in 2023/early 2024; the owners have sympathetically retained many of the original features, such as the grey slate floor and the spice cupboard (now housing books and board games), to make a cosy home from home for friends or family. Business travellers would also benefit from the proximity to BAE in Barrow-in-Furness.

The house has two floors above ground, with a cosy living room and well-equipped kitchen on the ground floor, two lovely bedrooms, a large bathroom, and a utility cupboard housing the washing machine and tumble dryer on the first floor.

The dining room is on the lower ground level, accessed from the kitchen, a lovely space to enjoy a home-cooked meal or perhaps a takeaway from one of the many local food outlets - you are on holiday, after all! Guests should be aware that the stairs to the lower dining room are the original stone stairs without spindles, so children should be careful when using the stairs.

If you're looking for a fabulous holiday home close to all the popular amenities in the South Lakes, 40 The Gill is a perfect choice.

About the location

Ulverston: Your Cosy Cumbrian Escape

Ulverston isn't your typical tourist trap. This little gem on the edge of the Lake District is perfect for a relaxing getaway packed with history, stunning scenery, and enough pubs to keep you happy for days.

History Buffs Welcome (but not Required); think cobbled streets, a cool old church (Ulverston Parish Church, if you're keeping score), and grand buildings that scream "posh past." History nerds will love Swarthmoor Hall, the birthplace of Quakerism, and there's even a Laurel and Hardy Museum celebrating the famous comedy duo - did you know Stan Laurel was born in Ulverston?

Ulverston is basically the gateway to the Lake District's playground. Want to see England's biggest lake (Windermere)? Hike epic trails (Coniston Old Man)? Chill in adorable villages like Grasmere? Dine in Cartmels Michelin-starred restaurants (L'Enclume & Rogan & Co)? Ulverston's got your back (and your hiking boots).

But Wait, There's More! Ulverston isn't just a launch pad for the Lakes. Take a break in Ford Park, a pretty green space, or visit The Coro, a restored art deco theatre, perfect for catching a show, and the food scene is no slouch either – fresh, local nosh awaits!

Ulverston: Small Town, Big Charm: So ditch the crowds and embrace Ulverston's unique blend of history, cosiness, and stunning scenery. Whether you're a history buff, an outdoor adventurer, or need a pub crawl with a view, Ulverston promises a memorable (and likely relaxing) escape.

  • Coniston: 14 Miles
  • Cartmel (Cartmel Racecourse): 12 Miles
  • Newby Bridge (for Windermere): 8 Miles
  • Barrow-in-Furness: 10 Miles
