Hunsonby

About the location

Hunsonby is in the very heart of the Eden Valley which is a lush region of farmland, rolling hills, woodland and the river itself, which is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful in this part of the world. The countryside is dotted with some beautiful villages, usually built with the local red sandstone. Ancient names such as Armathwaite, Melmerby, Lazonby and Kirksoswald hint at the Viking settlers from over a thousand years ago who were the first to establish many of the villages to be found in the region. Nowadays, these old villages have kept hold of their pubs and several are a real treat for food lovers. Speaking of food, the famous Old Village Bakery and cafe at Melmerby is just a few miles from Hunsonby. The Eden Valley has a surprising number of outdoor swimming pools which are generally open May - September. Amazingly, Hunsonby, which is a very small village, has its own outdoor pool that anyone can enjoy. Open 8am - 8pm - you can pre-pay using your phone or via the honesty box. This small pool is just a two-minute walk from Bramley Cottage.

The local railway station (2 miles away in Langwathby) is a stop on the Settle-to-Carlisle Railway, which is one of the most beautiful railway journeys in Britain, and where trains, including 'Steam Specials' still wend their way through some of the finest countryside in Britain.

For a larger town, Penrith is just 7 miles away and has large supermarkets (Morrisons and Sainsbury's), the mainline railway station, loads of local, independent shops, cafes and traditional pubs, and a leisure centre.

Outdoor enthusiasts have so much to choose from. There are no end of walks in the Eden Valley, on the high fells of the North Pennines (within a 15 minute drive), and the Lake District's eastern region around Ullswater is only 12 miles away. There's a really good network of very quiet lanes for cycling - how about cycling on the quiet lanes to the 'big city' attractions of Carlisle and then taking your bikes on the train back to Langwathby Railway Station, which is just a two-mile ride back to the cottage
