Osprey Lodge

Glenridding
Sleeps 4

Perched on the grounds of the historic Patterdale Estate with views of the shimmering waters of Ullswater and the dramatic fells beyond, Osprey Lodge is a beautifully crafted modern retreat that perfectly balances contemporary comfort with the raw, breathtaking splendour of the Lake District. One of three exclusive lodges with lake views on this remarkable estate, Osprey offers an intimacy and sense of escape that larger resorts simply cannot match. Whether you're settling into the generous open-plan living space with a glass of something local, or stepping out onto the glass-balustrade decking to breathe in the mountain air, every moment here feels like a quiet privilege.

Designed with effortless living in mind, the lodge is arranged entirely on a single level beneath soaring vaulted ceilings, with extensive glazing that frames the lake and fell views like a living work of art. Two sets of French patio doors invite you seamlessly outside to the enclosed decking — ideal for morning coffees as mist rises from Ullswater, or evening gatherings as the sky shifts through shades of amber and rose. With two well-appointed bedrooms — including a principal room with a luxurious king-size bed and en-suite walk-in shower — Osprey is perfectly suited to small families or two couples seeking a stylish and sociable base from which to explore one of England's most iconic landscapes.

Beyond the lodge itself, the Patterdale Estate grounds add a wonderful communal dimension to your stay. Stroll the estate pathways down to the lake shore, gather around the shared fire pit under a canopy of stars, or let your four-legged companion roam the sweeping shared lawns. And with the villages of Patterdale and Glenridding just a short walk away, and the famous Ullswater Steamers pier virtually on your doorstep, the very best of the Lake District is yours to discover from the moment you arrive.

Staying at Osprey Lodge is about far more than a holiday — it is a chance to be part of something genuinely meaningful. The Patterdale Estate is a wholly owned subsidiary of YMCA North Tyneside, and every stay generates a surplus that is gifted directly to the charity's vital work supporting vulnerable and disadvantaged young people across the North East. The estate was founded on the extraordinary philanthropic vision of Rowland Lishman, who purchased the 400-acre estate in 1950 and gifted it to the YMCA with the express purpose of preserving the natural beauty of the Lake District and sharing it with as many people as possible. When you book Osprey Lodge, you're not just treating yourself — you're helping to make a real difference.

About the location

Osprey Lodge sits within the Patterdale Estate on the southern shores of Ullswater — widely regarded as one of the most beautiful lakes in England, and famously described by William Wordsworth as "perhaps the most beautiful of all." Glenridding, the nearest village, is just a short and pleasant walk from the lodge and offers a handful of independent shops, a well-stocked general store, cosy pubs and cafés, as well as the main pier for the celebrated Ullswater Steamers. These iconic Victorian vessels sail the length of the lake, calling at Howtown and Pooley Bridge — making it effortlessly easy to enjoy a one-way cruise and return on foot along the spectacular lakeshore path, one of the finest low-level walks in the Lake District.

The surrounding landscape is an adventure playground for walkers, cyclists and wild swimmers alike. The towering bulk of Helvellyn — England's third highest peak — rises directly above Glenridding, and the ridge walk via Striding Edge is one of the most celebrated mountain routes in the country. For something gentler, the walk along the valley floor to the sister village of Patterdale takes just minutes, whilst the stunning Aira Force waterfall, a dramatic 65-foot cascade set within National Trust woodland, is easily reached by Steamer or on foot from the northern shores of the lake. Red squirrels, ospreys and red deer are all regular visitors to the valley, adding a genuine sense of wildlife wonder to every outdoor excursion.

The broader Eden Valley and wider Lake District National Park offer an abundance of further exploration, from the market towns of Penrith and Keswick to the quiet charms of the Eastern Fells, which remain refreshingly uncrowded even during peak season. The M6 motorway is easily accessible for arrivals, and the area rewards those who linger — whether that means a lazy morning on the decking with binoculars trained on the lake, or a long day's hiking followed by a well-earned supper at a local inn..
