South Lodge is a peaceful single-storey hideaway for up to four guests on Murthwaite Farm, a working sheep farm in the unspoilt valley of Longsleddale. It shares the farm with just one other lodge, North Lodge, and sits around five miles from Kendal, making it a calm, rural base that's still within easy reach of the town and the wider Lake District.
From the lodge and its patio, the view looks south over open farmland towards Garnett Bridge, where the valley opens out. Sheep and lambs graze in the fields below, and the scene changes with the seasons: spring lambing, summer hay meadows and the low autumn light. With the view facing south, the patio is a lovely spot to sit out with a morning cuppa or an evening drink.
The lodge is all on one level and easy to settle into. Its open-plan living space combines a well-equipped kitchen, a window-side dining table and a cosy sitting area with a gas fire for cooler evenings. French doors open onto the decking and garden. A central hallway leads to the bedrooms: a king-size room with a walk-in wardrobe and a twin room, both served by a shower room with a rain shower.
The walking starts right on the doorstep. You can follow the River Sprint along the valley floor, or head up the dale to Sadgill and the old packhorse route over the Gatescarth Pass. Either way, the lodge, the quiet and the view across the fields are waiting at the end of the day.
